The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, to give the region its official name, operates under different rules to the majority of the People's Republic, thanks to its legacy of British rule (Macao City, once run by Portugal, enjoys a similar status). Hong Kong has been a business and financial centre for many years, and has long been filled with expatriates from around the world. China taking control of it has not affected this too much

The rest of China was effectively closed to most foreigners until recently. However, slow liberalisation of China's business environment - and the awareness of the sheer size of the Chinese market - has changed that, with a flood of business people, among others, making their homes in China's major cities.
